Death for Egypt’s Firstborn

11Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will strike Pharaoh and the land of Egypt with one more blow. After that, Pharaoh will let you leave this country. In fact, he will be so eager to get rid of you that he will force you all to leave.H3068H559H4872H935H259H5061H6547H4714H310H7971H7971H1644H1644H3617 2Tell all the Israelite men and women to ask their Egyptian neighbors for articles of silver and gold."H1696H241H5971H376H7592H7453H802H7468H3627H3701H3627H2091 3(Now the LORD had caused the Egyptians to look favorably on the people of Israel. And Moses was considered a very great man in the land of Egypt, respected by Pharaoh's officials and the Egyptian people alike.)H3068H5414H5971H2580H5869H4714H376H4872H3966H1419H776H4714H5869H6547H5650H5869H5971 4Moses had announced to Pharaoh, "This is what the LORD says: At midnight tonight I will pass through the heart of Egypt.H4872H559H559H3068H3915H2676H3318H8432H4714 5All the firstborn sons will die in every family in Egypt, from the oldest son of Pharaoh, who sits on his throne, to the oldest son of his lowliest servant girl who grinds the flour. Even the firstborn of all the livestock will die.H1060H776H4714H4191H1060H6547H3427H3678H1060H8198H310H7347H1060H929 6Then a loud wail will rise throughout the land of Egypt, a wail like no one has heard before or will ever hear again.H1961H1419H6818H776H4714H3808H3808H3254 7But among the Israelites it will be so peaceful that not even a dog will bark. Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites.H1121H3478H3611H2782H3956H376H929H3045H3068H6395H4714H3478 8All the officials of Egypt will run to me and fall to the ground before me. 'Please leave!' they will beg. 'Hurry! And take all your followers with you.' Only then will I go!" Then, burning with anger, Moses left Pharaoh.H5650H3381H7812H559H3318H5971H7272H310H3318H3318H6547H2750H639 9Now the LORD had told Moses earlier, "Pharaoh will not listen to you, but then I will do even more mighty miracles in the land of Egypt."H3068H559H4872H6547H8085H4159H7235H776H4714 10Moses and Aaron performed these miracles in Pharaoh's presence, but the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he wouldn't let the Israelites leave the country.H4872H175H6213H4159H6440H6547H3068H2388H6547H3820H1121H3478H7971H776

The First Passover

12While the Israelites were still in the land of Egypt, the LORD gave the following instructions to Moses and Aaron.H3068H559H4872H175H776H4714H559 2"From now on, this month will be the first month of the year for you.H2320H7218H2320H7223H2320H8141 3Announce to the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each family must choose a lamb or a young goat for a sacrifice, one animal for each household.H1696H5712H3478H559H6218H2320H3947H376H7716H1004H1H7716H1004 4If a family is too small to eat a whole animal, let them share with another family in the neighborhood. Divide the animal according to the size of each family and how much they can eat.H1004H1961H4591H7716H7934H7138H1004H3947H4373H5315H376H6310H400H3699H7716 5The animal you select must be a one-year-old male, either a sheep or a goat, with no defects.H7716H8549H2145H1121H8141H3947H3532H5795 6"Take special care of this chosen animal until the evening of the fourteenth day of this first month. Then the whole assembly of the community of Israel must slaughter their lamb or young goat at twilight.H4931H702H6240H3117H2320H3605H6951H5712H3478H7819H996H6153 7They are to take some of the blood and smear it on the sides and top of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the animal.H3947H1818H5414H8147H4201H4947H1004H398 8That same night they must roast the meat over a fire and eat it along with bitter salad greens and bread made without yeast.H398H1320H3915H6748H784H4682H4844H398 9Do not eat any of the meat raw or boiled in water. The whole animal—including the head, legs, and internal organs—must be roasted over a fire.H398H4995H1310H1311H4325H6748H784H7218H3767H7130 10Do not leave any of it until the next morning. Burn whatever is not eaten before morning.H3498H1242H3498H1242H8313H784 11"These are your instructions for eating this meal: Be fully dressedc, wear your sandals, and carry your walking stick in your hand. Eat the meal with urgency, for this is the LORD's Passover.H3602H398H4975H2296H5275H7272H4731H3027H398H2649H3068H6453 12On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn son and firstborn male animal in the land of Egypt. I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt, for I am the LORD!H5674H776H4714H3915H5221H1060H776H4714H120H929H430H4714H6213H8201H3068 13But the blood on your doorposts will serve as a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. This plague of death will not touch you when I strike the land of Egypt.H1818H226H1004H7200H1818H6452H5063H4889H5221H776H4714 14"This is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the LORD. This is a law for all time.H3117H2146H2287H2282H3068H1755H2287H2708H5769 15For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the first day of the festival, remove every trace of yeast from your homes. Anyone who eats bread made with yeast during the seven days of the festival will be cut off from the community of Israel.H7651H3117H398H4682H389H7223H3117H7673H7603H1004H398H2557H7223H3117H7637H3117H5315H3772H3478 16On the first day of the festival and again on the seventh day, all the people must observe an official day for holy assembly. No work of any kind may be done on these days except in the preparation of food.H7223H3117H6944H4744H7637H3117H6944H4744H4399H6213H389H5315H398H6213 17"Celebrate this Festival of Unleavened Bread, for it will remind you that I brought your forces out of the land of Egypt on this very day. This festival will be a permanent law for you; celebrate this day from generation to generation.H8104H4682H6106H3117H3318H6635H776H4714H8104H3117H1755H2708H5769 18The bread you eat must be made without yeast from the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month until the evening of the twenty-first day of that month.H7223H6240H702H3117H2320H6153H398H4682H259H6242H3117H2320H6153 19During those seven days, there must be no trace of yeast in your homes. Anyone who eats anything made with yeast during this week will be cut off from the community of Israel. These regulations apply both to the foreigners living among you and to the native-born Israelites.H7651H3117H7603H4672H1004H398H2556H5315H3772H5712H3478H1616H249H776 20During those days you must not eat anything made with yeast. Wherever you live, eat only bread made without yeast."H398H2556H4186H398H4682 21Then Moses called all the elders of Israel together and said to them, "Go, pick out a lamb or young goat for each of your families, and slaughter the Passover animal.H4872H7121H2205H3478H559H4900H3947H6629H4940H7819H6453 22Drain the blood into a basin. Then take a bundle of hyssop branches and dip it into the blood. Brush the hyssop across the top and sides of the doorframes of your houses. And no one may go out through the door until morning.H3947H92H231H2881H1818H5592H5060H4947H8147H4201H1818H5592H376H3318H6607H1004H1242 23For the LORD will pass through the land to strike down the Egyptians. But when he sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, the LORD will pass over your home. He will not permit his death angel to enter your house and strike you down.H3068H5674H5062H4714H7200H1818H4947H8147H4201H3068H6452H6607H5414H7843H935H1004H5062 24"Remember, these instructions are a permanent law that you and your descendants must observe forever.H8104H1697H2706H1121H5704H5769 25When you enter the land the LORD has promised to give you, you will continue to observe this ceremony.H935H776H3068H5414H1696H8104H5656 26Then your children will ask, 'What does this ceremony mean?'H1121H559H5656 27And you will reply, 'It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. And though he struck the Egyptians, he spared our families.'" When Moses had finished speaking, all the people bowed down to the ground and worshiped.H559H2077H3068H6453H6452H1004H1121H3478H4714H5062H4714H5337H1004H5971H6915H7812 28So the people of Israel did just as the LORD had commanded through Moses and Aaron.H1121H3478H3212H6213H3068H6680H4872H175H6213 29And that night at midnight, the LORD struck down all the firstborn sons in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn son of the prisoner in the dungeon. Even the firstborn of their livestock were killed.H2677H3915H3068H5221H1060H776H4714H1060H6547H3427H3678H1060H7628H1004H953H1060H929 30Pharaoh and all his officials and all the people of Egypt woke up during the night, and loud wailing was heard throughout the land of Egypt. There was not a single house where someone had not died.H6547H6965H3915H5650H4714H1419H6818H4714H1004H4191

Israel’s Exodus from Egypt

31Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron during the night. "Get out!" he ordered. "Leave my people—and take the rest of the Israelites with you! Go and worship the LORD as you have requested.H7121H4872H175H3915H559H6965H3318H8432H5971H1121H3478H3212H5647H3068H1696 32Take your flocks and herds, as you said, and be gone. Go, but bless me as you leave."H3947H6629H1241H1696H3212H1288 33All the Egyptians urged the people of Israel to get out of the land as quickly as possible, for they thought, "We will all die!"H4714H2388H5971H7971H776H4116H559H4191 34The Israelites took their bread dough before yeast was added. They wrapped their kneading boards in their cloaks and carried them on their shoulders.H5971H5375H1217H2556H4863H6887H8071H7926 35And the people of Israel did as Moses had instructed; they asked the Egyptians for clothing and articles of silver and gold.H1121H3478H6213H1697H4872H7592H4714H3627H3701H3627H2091H8071 36The LORD caused the Egyptians to look favorably on the Israelites, and they gave the Israelites whatever they asked for. So they stripped the Egyptians of their wealth!H3068H5414H5971H2580H5869H4714H7592H5337H4714 37That night the people of Israel left Rameses and started for Succoth. There were about 600,000 menc, plus all the women and children.H1121H3478H5265H7486H5523H8337H3967H505H7273H1397H905H2945 38A rabble of non-Israelites went with them, along with great flocks and herds of livestock.H6154H7227H5927H6629H1241H3966H3515H4735 39For bread they baked flat cakes from the dough without yeast they had brought from Egypt. It was made without yeast because the people were driven out of Egypt in such a hurry that they had no time to prepare the bread or other food.H644H4682H5692H1217H3318H4714H2556H1644H4714H3201H4102H6213H6720 40The people of Israel had lived in Egyptc for 430 years.H4186H1121H3478H3427H4714H702H3967H8141H7970H8141 41In fact, it was on the last day of the 430th year that all the LORD's forces left the land.H7093H702H3967H8141H7970H8141H6106H3117H6635H3068H3318H776H4714 42On this night the LORD kept his promise to bring his people out of the land of Egypt. So this night belongs to him, and it must be commemorated every year by all the Israelites, from generation to generation.H3915H8107H3068H3318H776H4714H3915H3068H8107H1121H3478H1755

Instructions for the Passover

43Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "These are the instructions for the festival of Passover. No outsiders are allowed to eat the Passover meal.H3068H559H4872H175H2708H6453H1121H5236H398 44But any slave who has been purchased may eat it if he has been circumcised.H376H5650H4736H3701H4135H398 45Temporary residents and hired servants may not eat it.H8453H7916H398 46Each Passover lamb must be eaten in one house. Do not carry any of its meat outside, and do not break any of its bones.H259H1004H398H3318H1320H2351H1004H7665H6106 47The whole community of Israel must celebrate this Passover festival.H5712H3478H6213 48"If there are foreigners living among you who want to celebrate the LORD's Passover, let all their males be circumcised. Only then may they celebrate the Passover with you like any native-born Israelite. But no uncircumcised male may ever eat the Passover meal.H1616H1481H6213H6453H3068H2145H4135H7126H6213H249H776H6189H398 49This instruction applies to everyone, whether a native-born Israelite or a foreigner living among you."H259H8451H249H1616H1481H8432 50So all the people of Israel followed all the LORD's commands to Moses and Aaron.H6213H1121H3478H3068H6680H4872H175H6213 51On that very day the LORD brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt like an army.H6106H3117H3068H3318H1121H3478H776H4714H6635

Dedication of the Firstborn

13Then the LORD said to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H559 2"Dedicate to me every firstborn among the Israelites. The first offspring to be born, of both humans and animals, belongs to me."H6942H1060H6363H7358H1121H3478H120H929 3So Moses said to the people, "This is a day to remember forever—the day you left Egypt, the place of your slavery. Today the LORD has brought you out by the power of his mighty hand. (Remember, eat no food containing yeast.)H4872H559H5971H2142H2088H3117H3318H4714H1004H5650H2392H3027H3068H3318H2557H398 4On this day in early spring, in the month of Abibc, you have been set free.H3117H3318H2320H24 5You must celebrate this event in this month each year after the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites. (He swore to your ancestors that he would give you this land—a land flowing with milk and honey.)H3068H935H776H3669H2850H567H2340H2983H7650H1H5414H776H2100H2461H1706H5647H5656H2320 6For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. Then on the seventh day, celebrate a feast to the LORD.H7651H3117H398H4682H7637H3117H2282H3068 7Eat bread without yeast during those seven days. In fact, there must be no yeast bread or any yeast at all found within the borders of your land during this time.H4682H398H7651H3117H2557H7200H7603H7200H1366 8"On the seventh day you must explain to your children, 'I am celebrating what the LORD did for me when I left Egypt.'H5046H1121H3117H559H5668H2088H3068H6213H3318H4714 9This annual festival will be a visible sign to you, like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. Let it remind you always to recite this teaching of the LORD: 'With a strong hand, the LORD rescued you from Egypt.'cH226H3027H2146H5869H3068H8451H6310H2389H3027H3068H3318H4714 10So observe the decree of this festival at the appointed time each year.H8104H2708H4150H3117H3117 11"This is what you must do when the LORD fulfills the promise he swore to you and to your ancestors. When he gives you the land where the Canaanites now live,H3068H935H776H3669H7650H1H5414 12you must present all firstborn sons and firstborn male animals to the LORD, for they belong to him.H5674H3068H6363H7358H6363H7698H929H2145H3068 13A firstborn donkey may be bought back from the LORD by presenting a lamb or young goat in its place. But if you do not buy it back, you must break its neck. However, you must buy back every firstborn son.H6363H2543H6299H7716H6299H6202H1060H120H1121H6299 14"And in the future, your children will ask you, 'What does all this mean?' Then you will tell them, 'With the power of his mighty hand, the LORD brought us out of Egypt, the place of our slavery.H1121H7592H4279H559H559H2392H3027H3068H3318H4714H1004H5650 15Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, so the LORD killed all the firstborn males throughout the land of Egypt, both people and animals. That is why I now sacrifice all the firstborn males to the LORD—except that the firstborn sons are always bought back.'H6547H7185H7971H3068H2026H1060H776H4714H1060H120H1060H929H2076H3068H6363H7358H2145H1060H1121H6299 16This ceremony will be like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. It is a reminder that the power of the LORD's mighty hand brought us out of Egypt."H226H3027H2903H5869H2392H3027H3068H3318H4714

Israel’s Wilderness Detour

17When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, "If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt."H6547H5971H7971H430H5148H1870H776H6430H3588H7138H430H559H5971H5162H7200H4421H7725H4714 18So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Seac. Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle.H430H5437H5971H5437H1870H4057H5488H3220H1121H3478H5927H2571H776H4714 19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear to do this. He said, "God will certainly come to help you. When he does, you must take my bones with you from this place."H4872H3947H6106H3130H7650H7650H1121H3478H559H430H6485H6485H5927H6106H5927 20The Israelites left Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness.H5265H5523H2583H864H7097H4057 21The LORD went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night.H3068H1980H6440H3119H5982H6051H5148H1870H3915H5982H784H215H3212H3119H3915 22And the LORD did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.H4185H5982H6051H3119H5982H784H3915H6440H5971
